Bins and recycling in Wiltshire

What goes in each of Wiltshire's bins, and where to take the things they don't collect. This page uses Wiltshire Council's own published information, checked 10 Oct 2026.

Recycle This is independent: it isn't run by Wiltshire Council. If anything here differs from Wiltshire Council's website, the council is right.

Your bins in Wiltshire

  • Household waste bin

Collected fortnightly Non-recyclable household waste in your 180-litre wheeled bin, collected every two weeks. Food waste goes in here for now, because Wiltshire doesn't collect food separately yet. Not for small electricals, batteries, garden waste, chemicals, gas bottles, paint, clinical waste or real Christmas trees. Put it out by 7am. The council plans to move to three-weekly collections in 2027.

  • Blue-lidded recycling bin

Collected fortnightly Mixed dry recycling in the 240-litre blue-lidded bin, rinsed and loose (not in a black bag): paper and cardboard, drinks and food cartons, plastic bottles, plastic food trays, yoghurt pots and tubs, food and drink cans and tins, metal biscuit tins, clean foil and foil trays, empty aerosols, and upright pump toothpaste tubes and metal tubes. No black plastic, film lids, cling film, plastic bags, crisp or sweet packets, pet food pouches, disposable cups, polystyrene, plant pots, rigid plastic such as toys, scrap metal, shredded paper, pizza boxes soiled with food or glass. Some homes without room for a bin use weighted sacks instead. Emptied on the same day as your black box, out by 7am.

  • Black box (or basket) for glass

Collected fortnightly Glass bottles and jars in the 55-litre black box or basket. Keep the tops on bottles and jars. Emptied on the same day as your blue-lidded bin.

  • Carrier bag of small rechargeable electricals

Collected fortnightly (recycling day) Small electricals in a supermarket carrier bag, put beside your blue-lidded bin or blue sack on collection day: smart speakers, charging devices and MP3 players, electric toothbrushes, shavers and trimmers, all vapes and e-cigarettes, smartwatches, wireless earphones, tablets and e-readers, mobile phones, digital cameras, camcorders, power banks and docking stations, laptops, wireless games controllers, and cables. No single item bigger than a shoe box (about 30 x 20 cm). Remove all data and SIM cards first.

  • Clear bag of batteries on your bin

Collected fortnightly (recycling day) Household batteries (D, C, AA, AAA, 9V, button and rechargeable) in a sealed clear sandwich bag on top of your blue-lidded bin, never inside it. Not accepted: car, e-scooter, mobility scooter, motorbike, leisure and sealed lead-acid or gel batteries, children's ride-on toy batteries, or batteries with trailing wires.

  • Garden waste bin (paid subscription)

Collected fortnightly Garden waste in a 180-litre wheeled bin, for households that pay for the chargeable garden waste service (from £78 for a first registration in April to August 2026, £48 in September to December, £20 in January to March 2027; it covers fortnightly emptying until 30 June). Grass, hedge clippings, leaves, prunings, weeds, twigs, small branches and real Christmas trees cut up. No food waste, soil, turf, rubble, ash, paper, plant pots, large branches or packaging, including compostable bags. Collection dates only show in the bin-day lookup if you subscribe.

No black plastic, film lids, cling film, plastic bags, crisp or sweet packets, pet food pouches, disposable cups, polystyrene, plant pots, rigid plastic such as toys, scrap metal, shredded paper, pizza boxes soiled with food or glass.
