Terms of use
Recycle This app and website · Last updated 16 October 2026
These terms apply when you use the Recycle This app or this website. By using the app, you agree to them. Please read them alongside our privacy policy.
1. What Recycle This is
Recycle This is an Android app from Sustainable Design Studio Ltd. You photograph an item, or type its name, and it tells you which bin it goes in, using your council's published rules. It also shows bin days, nearby drop-off points and guidance on the deposit return scheme.
2. Answers are guidance
Answers come from council and national rules. The AI only works out what the item is. The answers are guidance only. Councils change their services, so please check anything important with your council.
Recycle This isn't run by or endorsed by any council or the government.
3. No guarantee
The app is provided "as is". We can't promise that every answer, bin day or drop-off place is correct or up to date, or that the app will always be available.
4. Using the app fairly
The scanning service has daily limits so it stays fair for everyone. Please don't misuse the scanning service, overload it, or try to get round its daily limits. Only scan the items you want to get rid of.
5. Removing ads
The app is free, with ads. "Remove ads" is an optional subscription in the app, monthly or yearly. The app shows the price before you buy (£1.49 a month or £9.99 a year at launch).
The subscription renews automatically at the end of each month or year until you cancel it. You pay through your Google Play account on Android, or your Apple Account on iPhone, when you confirm the purchase and at each renewal. On iPhone, Apple renews it unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
To cancel on Android, open Google Play, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. The app's Settings, Manage subscription takes you to the same place. Ads come back when the period you've paid for ends.
Google Play or Apple handles the payment, renewals, cancellations and refunds, under their own rules. If you reinstall the app or change phone, use Settings, Restore purchase.
If you got the app from Apple's App Store, Apple's standard licensed application end user licence agreement (Apple's standard EULA) also applies, alongside these terms.
6. Who owns what
The Recycle This app and this website belong to Sustainable Design Studio Ltd. Drop-off point locations include data from OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). Some bin-day lookups use UKBinCollectionData, under the MIT licence. See the data credits.
7. Age
Recycle This is for adults aged 18 and over.
8. Changes
We may change, pause or stop the app, or any part of it, at any time. We may also update these terms. If we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page.
9. Our liability
As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for any loss that comes from relying on an answer, a bin day or a drop-off place in the app. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any liability that the law doesn't allow us to limit or exclude, and nothing in them affects your legal rights as a consumer.
10. Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
